Abstract

This qualitative study explores how digital technology influences social capital formation among urban youth in Indonesia. Within the rapidly digi-talizing Indonesian society, technology has transformed how young people establish and maintain social connections, yet research examining these dynamics remains limited. This study employed in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with 35 youth (aged 18-25) from Jakarta, Suraba-ya, and Yogyakarta to explore their experiences with digital technology in forming bridging and bonding social capital. Findings reveal a paradoxical relationship: while digital platforms enable broader network development, they often result in weaker interpersonal ties. Urban Indonesian youth strategically navigate online and offline worlds, utilizing digital spaces to expand connections while retaining face-to-face interactions for deeper relationship building. The study further identifies distinct patterns of social capital formation across socioeconomic backgrounds. The results contrib-ute to theoretical understandings of contemporary social capital formation in digitally evolving societies and provide insights for development initia-tives targeting youth engagement in Indonesia's urban centers.
