Speaking, Strategies, EFL Freshmen


This study aims to find out the speaking problems faced by second semester English education students at the Islamic Institut of islamic (IAI) As’ Adiyah Sengkang. This study is included in a qualitative study involving 12 students of English education in the second semester of the Islamic Institute (IAI) As'adiyah Sengkang. The research instruments were observation, questionnaires and interviews. The results showed that the speaking problems of second semester English education students were: lack of vocabulary mastery, lack of confidence, pronunciation problems, feeling embarrassed and afraid to make mistakes, feeling nervous, habit of using mother tongue and lack of practice. The strategies used by second semester English education students to overcome their speaking problems are: increasing vocabulary mastery, discussing, learning through English videos and songs, practicing a lot, and being calm.
