Abstract

This research examines the role of zakat as an economic development instrument in Wajo Regency through a case study of the National Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) of Wajo Regency. Using a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, documentation, and observation methods, this study analyzes the collection, distribution, and utilization of zakat funds for community economic empowerment. The findings reveal that BAZNAS Wajo has implemented several productive zakat programs that have posi-tively impacted beneficiaries' income levels and economic independence. However, challenges remain, including limited public awareness, insuffi-cient institutional capacity, and the need for more comprehensive monitor-ing systems. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on Islamic social finance as a viable mechanism for economic development in Muslim-majority regions, offering practical insights for policymakers and zakat institutions seeking to optimize zakat's potential for poverty allevia-tion and community welfare.
