UNDERSTANDING AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICES OF STUDENTS AFTER FOLLOWING ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS EDUCATION (PAI): A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY IN HIGH SCHOOL

This study examines the understanding and religious practices of high school students following their participation in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) classes in Indonesia. Using a phenomenological approach, the re-search explores how students interpret, internalize, and implement reli-gious knowledge acquired through formal education in their daily lives. In-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions with students from three public high schools revealed three key dimensions of religious understanding and practice: cognitive comprehension of Islamic principles, development of religious attitudes and values, and implementa-tion of ritual practices. The findings demonstrate that while many students develop solid theoretical knowledge of Islamic teachings, the translation of this knowledge into consistent religious practice varies significantly based on factors including family background, peer influence, and school reli-gious climate. This research contributes to understanding the effective-ness of religious education in public schools and highlights the importance of comprehensive approaches that bridge the gap between religious knowledge acquisition and practice implementation.
