Abstract

This study explores the meaning of spirituality in religious activities as ex-perienced by students at MA Putra As'adiyah Sengkang, Macanang, an Islamic boarding school in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Using a narrative inquiry approach, the research examines how students construct spiritual meaning through participation in daily religious practices within the pe-santren environment. In-depth interviews and participant observation with 15 students revealed three key dimensions of spiritual meaning-making: ritualistic practice as spiritual discipline, communal worship as spiritual connection, and religious knowledge acquisition as spiritual enlightenment. The findings demonstrate that students experience spirituality not merely as formal religious compliance but as a multidimensional process of per-sonal and collective transformation. This research contributes to under-standing youth religious experience in Indonesian Islamic educational con-texts and highlights the importance of student-centered perspectives in religious education. The study suggests that educational institutions can enhance spiritual development by acknowledging the diverse ways stu-dents construct meaning through religious activities and by fostering envi-ronments that support both structured religious practices and personal spiritual exploration.
