This research explores the construction of religious tolerance meaning within Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at SMAN 3 Medan, a multicultural high school in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Using a grounded theory ap-proach, this study investigates how teachers and students collaboratively negotiate, interpret, and internalize concepts of religious tolerance through classroom interactions, curriculum implementation, and extracurricular activities. Data collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observa-tions, and document analysis reveal a dynamic process of meaning con-struction that unfolds through four interconnected phases: foundational understanding, experiential learning, reflective dialogue, and integrated practice. The findings demonstrate that effective religious tolerance educa-tion transcends theoretical concepts to encompass lived experiences that validate diverse religious perspectives while maintaining core Islamic val-ues. Key factors influencing this process include teachers' pedagogical approaches, school cultural context, student diversity backgrounds, and community partnerships. The research identifies a conceptual framework for religious tolerance meaning construction characterized by theological grounding, experiential engagement, critical reflection, and practical appli-cation. This study contributes to understanding how Islamic education can effectively foster meaningful religious tolerance in multicultural contexts and offers insights for curriculum development and teacher training that balance religious commitment with inclusive perspectives.
